Akhilesh Gains Ground In UP MLC Polls, Gorakhpur Gives BJP A Scare

Akhilesh Yadav and Yogi Adityanath amid UP MLC election results.

Lucknow, October 31:  The Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council election results have given Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav fresh political momentum ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections. While the BJP retained its numerical lead, the SP’s two-seat gain and an unexpectedly close contest in Gorakhpur have added a new dimension to the political battle.

Of the 11 seats, the BJP won six while the SP increased its tally from three in 2020 to five. The results covered five graduates’ and six teachers’ constituencies.

Gorakhpur Gives BJP A Scare

One of the most significant contests emerged in the Gorakhpur-Faizabad Teachers’ constituency, covering a region politically associated with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Independent candidate Rajeev Yadav mounted a strong challenge against BJP candidate Dhruv Kumar Tripathi, who eventually secured victory by just 307 votes after second-preference counting.

The narrow margin attracted attention because the BJP faced a serious challenge from an Independent rather than its principal political rival. Although the ruling party retained the seat, the contest demonstrated that its electoral dominance is not necessarily assured even in politically important regions.

Akhilesh Gains Ground

The SP’s victories in Lucknow, Agra and Varanasi strengthened its political position among sections of teachers and graduates.

Particularly significant were the party’s victories in both the Graduates’ and Teachers’ constituencies in Varanasi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency.

The SP also captured the Lucknow Graduates’ seat, defeating the BJP’s sitting representative.

These outcomes provide Akhilesh with an opportunity to project growing support among sections of educated voters and strengthen his party’s organisational confidence.

BJP Retains Its Lead

Despite these setbacks, the BJP remained the largest winner, securing six seats and retaining important constituencies across the state.

Its performance demonstrated continued organisational strength, particularly in several teachers’ constituencies.

Moreover, Legislative Council elections involve restricted electorates, making direct comparisons with Assembly elections unreliable.

Psychological Battle Ahead

Politically, the results offer Akhilesh a psychological opening rather than a decisive electoral advantage.

The SP’s improved tally, victories in prominent constituencies and the close Gorakhpur contest provide fresh talking points for the Opposition.

However, the Independent candidate’s performance in Gorakhpur cannot automatically be counted as support for the SP.

For the BJP, the results underline the importance of addressing local dissatisfaction while preserving its broader electoral organisation.

With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, both parties have reasons to reassess their strategies, but the SP enters the next phase with renewed confidence.
