Lucknow: Akhilesh Yadav could gain a psychological advantage ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections if the Samajwadi Party secures three seats in the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls. Such an outcome could energise workers and strengthen perceptions of the party’s political reach.
The nomination of Reliance Industries group president Dhanraj Parimal Nathwani has brought that possibility into focus. However, the SP currently has the numbers for two seats, making a third victory dependent on additional support.
A Morale Boost Before 2027
For Akhilesh, winning beyond the party’s expected tally could provide a message before the Assembly campaign: the SP can attract support outside its own legislative ranks.
That could lift organisational confidence and help the party project itself as a stronger challenger to the ruling alliance. These remain potential political gains, rather than an assured consequence of Nathwani’s nomination.
The SP has nominated Nathwani and Ram Gopal Yadav. Akhilesh attended their nominations, while uncertainty continues over whether the party will field a third candidate.
Why Nathwani Matters
Nathwani, considered close to Mukesh Ambani, brings corporate and political connections that could widen the party’s outreach.
Akhilesh is assessing the response to Nathwani’s nomination. Former Union minister Salim Iqbal Shervani is among the names being discussed for a possible third candidature.
Political observers have drawn parallels with Mulayam Singh Yadav’s backing of Anil Ambani’s Rajya Sabha candidature in 2004.
Numbers Will Decide The Strategy
Ten seats are being contested in Uttar Pradesh. The report places the NDA in a position to win eight and the SP two.
With seven Assembly seats vacant, the report calculates the effective strength at 396 and the winning requirement at 37 first-preference votes per candidate.
It counts 99 available SP legislators, excluding jailed MLA Ramakant Yadav from its strength of 100. Winning three seats would require 111 votes, leaving a shortfall of 12.
Even backing from Congress’s two legislators would leave the SP needing ten additional votes.

A Gamble With Political Stakes
Former chief secretary Alok Ranjan, previously considered a likely nominee, has missed out. The report attributes this to internal opposition and questions over the political benefit of his candidature.
His defeat as the SP’s third candidate in 2024, after seven party legislators cross-voted, underlines the risks.
For Akhilesh, a third-seat win could build confidence before 2027. But the psychological dividend depends on turning political contacts into votes, while keeping his own legislators together through a contest that remains uncertain.
