US Fed Holds Interest Rates At 3.75%-4%, Two Officials Back Rate Hike

US Federal Reserve holds interest rates at 3.75%-4%.

Washington, October 29: The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday kept its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.75%-4%, following a 25-basis-point increase in September.

The decision was widely expected by financial markets. Investors will now closely monitor its impact on global equities, including Indian stock markets, and future monetary policy decisions.

Split Decision

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) voted 10-2 in favour of maintaining the existing interest rate range.

Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack opposed the decision, favouring a 25-basis-point rate increase.

The disagreement highlighted differing views among policymakers on how aggressively the central bank should tackle persistent inflation.

December Outlook

Following the announcement, market attention shifted towards Federal Reserve Chairman Kevin Warsh’s comments and the possibility of another interest rate increase in December.

Investors will closely examine upcoming economic indicators, particularly inflation, employment and consumer spending, for clues about the Fed’s next policy move.

Any change in US interest rates could influence global capital flows, currency movements and stock market sentiment.

Stronger Economy

The Federal Reserve upgraded its assessment of the US economy, describing economic expansion as “strong” instead of the earlier “solid” assessment.

The central bank also highlighted robust investment activity and indicated that employment growth was broadly keeping pace with expansion in the workforce.

These developments suggest that economic activity remains resilient despite elevated borrowing costs.

Inflation Concerns

The Fed acknowledged that inflation continues to remain elevated, reinforcing concerns about persistent price pressures.

The central bank reiterated its commitment to restoring price stability and bringing inflation back towards its 2% target.

It also indicated that future monetary policy decisions would depend on incoming economic data and evolving risks.

For Indian investors, the Fed’s policy outlook remains important because US interest rates influence foreign institutional investment flows, the rupee-dollar exchange rate and overall market sentiment.
