Mumbai: Tata Sons has reappointed N Chandrasekaran as Executive Chairman for another five-year term, reversing his earlier decision not to seek an extension when his current tenure ends in February 2027.
The decision was taken by a majority vote at the Tata Sons board meeting on September 17 after Chandrasekaran agreed to reconsider his earlier position.
Board Backs Chandrasekaran
Tata Sons said Tata Trusts had unanimously passed a resolution in July 2025 appreciating Chandrasekaran’s stewardship of the group since 2017 and supporting his reappointment for another five years.
The Tata Sons board subsequently agreed in principle to another term. However, the matter remained unresolved after discussions at several board meetings.
On August 12, 2026, Chandrasekaran informed the board that he would not offer himself for reappointment after his existing tenure.
The Nomination and Remuneration Committee later asked him to reconsider, citing his contribution and the wider interests of the Tata Group.
Chandrasekaran accepted the request at Thursday’s board meeting, following which directors approved his fresh five-year term by majority vote.
Tata Trusts Opposes Move
The decision has, however, opened a major disagreement with Tata Trusts, which controls about 66% of Tata Sons.
Tata Trusts Chairman Noel N Tata voted against the resolution and the Trusts described the reappointment as a “legal nullity”.
The Trusts maintains that provisions of Tata Sons’ Articles of Association require support from its nominee directors for such an appointment. Tata Sons, meanwhile, has announced the reappointment following the board’s majority vote.

Listing Back In Focus
The board also decided to initiate steps to comply with applicable Reserve Bank of India guidelines and seek guidance from the RBI, Tata Trusts and other stakeholders.
The development has put both Tata Sons’ leadership and its potential listing firmly back in focus as the disagreement between its board and majority shareholder continues.
