Mumbai: Passengers travelling by autorickshaws and black-and-yellow taxis across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will pay higher fares from Tuesday, September 1.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority has approved an increase of ₹1 in the minimum autorickshaw fare and ₹2 in the minimum taxi fare.
New minimum fares
The minimum autorickshaw fare will rise from ₹26 to ₹27. The minimum fare for black-and-yellow taxis, covering the first 1.5 kilometres, will increase from ₹31 to ₹33.
Beyond the minimum distance, passengers will also pay higher kilometre-based charges.
The revised taxi fare has been fixed at ₹21.90 per kilometre, compared with the existing rate of ₹20.66 per kilometre.
Autorickshaw fares will increase to ₹18.22 per kilometre from the current ₹17.14 per kilometre, according to a Regional Transport Office official.
Fare cards allowed temporarily
Drivers can begin charging the revised rates after recalibrating their electronic fare meters. Until the meters are updated, they can collect the new fares using an RTO-approved fare conversion table.
The transport authority, chaired by Maharashtra’s transport secretary, cleared the revision during its recent meeting.
Drivers have been given three months to recalibrate their electronic meters. The process must be completed by the end of November.
Penalties after deadline
The revised fares will take effect from September 1, irrespective of meter recalibration. Drivers who fail to update their meters within the stipulated period may face penalties.
The Mumbai Metropolitan Region has more than 4.5 lakh autorickshaws and over 50,000 black-and-yellow taxis. Most of these vehicles operate on compressed natural gas.
The fare increase comes after a gap of 18 months. The previous revision took effect on February 1, 2025, when the minimum fares for both autorickshaws and taxis were raised by ₹3.
Passengers should check the approved fare chart when travelling in vehicles whose meters have not yet been recalibrated.
