Mumbai: India observes Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 every year to mark the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. The day is a national holiday, with several banks, government offices, schools and financial institutions remaining closed.
However, several essential and online services will continue to operate. Here is what will remain open and closed on Friday, October 2, 2026.
Stock Market Closed
Indian stock markets will remain closed for trading on October 2 due to Gandhi Jayanti. There will be no regular trading on the BSE and NSE.
The holiday will also give investors a three-day break from regular trading because October 2 falls on a Friday, followed by Saturday and Sunday.
Will Banks Remain Closed?
Branches of public sector, private, foreign and cooperative banks will remain closed for Gandhi Jayanti. Customers will therefore not be able to carry out transactions that require a branch visit.
However, digital banking services will continue to operate normally. Customers can use UPI, mobile banking and internet banking.
NEFT and RTGS services will also remain available, while ATMs and cash deposit machines are expected to continue operating.
Schools And Government Offices
Central government offices will remain closed on October 2. Gandhi Jayanti is listed as a gazetted holiday for central government offices in Delhi and New Delhi.
State government offices will follow their respective holiday calendars, although Gandhi Jayanti is generally observed as a holiday across the country.
Schools and colleges are also expected to remain closed. Some educational institutions, however, may organise special Gandhi Jayanti programmes depending on their academic calendars.
What About Private Offices?
Private companies and commercial establishments follow their own holiday policies. While many companies may remain closed, offices providing essential services could continue operations.
The day is also observed as a dry day across the country, with liquor shops remaining closed.
