Mumbai: Oriental Insurance Company expects to return to profit in FY27, aided by proceeds from the sale of a small portion of its stake in the National Stock Exchange (NSE) through the upcoming IPO.
Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Joshi said the proceeds would be booked as profit, strengthening the public sector insurer’s financial position and providing additional liquidity.
NSE Stake Sale
Oriental Insurance is offering about 49.57 lakh NSE shares in the IPO. As of June 30, 2026, the insurer held 3.52 crore shares, representing a 1.42% stake in the exchange.
At the IPO’s upper price band of ₹1,785 per share, the insurer could realise around ₹885 crore from the sale. At the lower end of ₹1,700, the proceeds would be about ₹843 crore.
Oriental Insurance was among the initial investors in NSE, which was incorporated in 1992.
Joshi said NSE’s listing would also allow the value of Oriental Insurance’s remaining holding to be considered in calculating its solvency position, potentially strengthening the insurer’s solvency.
NSE IPO Opens September 17
NSE’s ₹22,569-crore IPO will open for subscription on September 17 and close on September 21.

The public issue comes nearly a decade after the exchange’s listing plans were held up by regulatory hurdles.
Premium Crosses ₹20,000 Crore
Oriental Insurance, which recently marked its 80th foundation day, also launched new products and customer initiatives.
For the financial year ended March 2026, the insurer’s gross premium crossed ₹20,000 crore, supported by growth across key business segments.
Group Personal Accident, health, fire and motor insurance portfolios were among the major contributors to premium growth.
The insurer said the performance reflected growing confidence among policyholders, intermediaries and other stakeholders.
The planned NSE stake sale could now provide an additional financial boost as Oriental Insurance targets a return to profitability in FY27 while strengthening liquidity and its solvency position.
