New Delhi: The 57th meeting of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) Council has been postponed to October 7 from the earlier scheduled date of September 12, according to sources.
The meeting is expected to be held in New Delhi, while an official notification confirming the revised schedule is likely to be issued separately.
BRICS Summit prompts postponement
The GST Council meeting was originally scheduled for September 12. However, the BRICS Leaders’ Summit scheduled for September 12-13 has led to a clash in dates, prompting the postponement, sources said.
Preparatory meetings involving GST officers have also been rescheduled ahead of the Council meeting.
According to an office memorandum sent to Council members, officials are expected to meet from 3 pm on October 5. Another preparatory meeting is scheduled from 11 am onwards on October 6.
ITC, refunds likely on agenda
The October 7 meeting is expected to take up several pending issues concerning input tax credit (ITC), GST refunds and compliance requirements.
Among the proposals likely to be discussed are measures to ease restrictions on certain ITC claims and address accumulated tax credits arising from the inverted duty structure.
The discussions could be important for businesses seeking simpler compliance requirements and faster resolution of tax-credit related issues.
First meeting since GST 2.0 changes
The 57th GST Council meeting will be the first since the major rationalisation of GST rates introduced in September 2025 under the GST 2.0 reforms.
Under the revamped structure, most goods and services were shifted to two main tax rates of 5 per cent and 18 per cent.
A special 40 per cent rate was introduced for a limited category of luxury and demerit goods, replacing the earlier 28 per cent slab along with compensation cess on such products. The revised rates took effect on September 22, 2025.
The GST Council is chaired by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and includes finance ministers representing states and Union Territories.
